May 2015 - New MD appointed to the Training  Band

The band is pleased to announce the appointment of a new MD  for their Training Band.

Andy went to school at Danum Academy, Doncaster where he studied from the age of 11-18. He started playing Trumpet at the age of 10  and soon joined the Doncaster Music Service and started playing in the Beginner Brass Group. From there he found his perfect instrument which is the Tuba and with this he graduated from the Doncaster Music Service at the age of 18. Andy was then recognized as an Orchestral Tubist when he was invited to become a member of the Boyce Orchestra in Doncaster.  His talents did not go unnoticed when he was later invited to join the Doncaster Youth Jazz Association.  In this Association Andy went onto learn Bass Trombone with the Stageband, and continued his development on the Tuba with the swing orchestra.

In 2014 Andy started his banding career with Thurcroft Welfare Band as Principal Eb Bass.

In 2015 Andy completed a Diploma in Instrumental and Vocal Tuition having studied with The Doncaster Music Service under the supervision of Mr David Tonkin and at McAuley Catholic School, Doncaster under the supervision of Mr David Allison.

June 2013 - Pam Stevenson receives a bouquet of flowers from the Training Band to thank her for her hard work and dedication.

New Instruments for the Training Band

May 2013 - Councillor John Swift recently visited Thurcroft WelfareTraining band to present 4 much needed new instruments to the band on behalf of the Community Development Foundation.

Thurcroft Welfare Training Band are a thriving training brass band where people of all ages can learn how to play a brass instrument under the expert tuition of our very experienced musical director Ken Vernon. Instruments and uniform are loaned free of charge making the band accessible to all. The band currently has around 30 members and undertakes regular concerts and contests in the local area. The support we receive from Community Development Foundation is invaluable to enable this to continue.

Ken Vernon, Musical Director said, " We are very grateful for the continued support of Councillor John Swift and the Community Development Foundation which has provided the band with uniform and much needed instruments in the past few years. We are very proud of our training band. The band continues to go from strength to strength and the instruments are particularly welcome as the band has grown considerably in size this year. It is great that Thurcroft has a training band that people of any age with an interest in making music can join. Everyone works hard and enjoys rehearsals and the events the band takes part in. It is also a great asset to the community and of course means that players can move up into the senior band, securing the future of Thurcroft Welfare Band as a whole."

Training Band Sucess at the Staveley

Training band took part in the Ireland Colliery Battle of the Bands contest, defending their first place win from last year.  Ken Vernon said he is very proud and was thrilled with the band’s performance – they played brilliantly. Well done to the soloists Ellie, Chloe and Lucy – Ellie was a star, playing Euphonium solo in The Ashgrove.  Everyone played exactly what they had been taught and it was a great sound as a result.  People listening have said that the tuning, ensemble and style were great.  We were all very surprised to hear the band were only placed 3rd.   Here are the adjudicator’s comments:

Concert Overture – Francis Clifford
Excellent opening sounds and style,  Very musical indeed.  Style is excellent.  Tuning and dynamics very well handled.  Great impressive start.

Bandilero Calypso Calapso – David Chapman
Slightly sticky melodic line to open.  Ensemble very secure! Percussion good. G+ section good.  Nice flow and colour.

Ashgrove – arr. Vernon
Nice sounds to open.  Very nice sounds. Good simple music – nice!

Young and Swinging – Gary Young
Good style for back row players.  I’d like to have heard more of the youngsters in this piece. (but I like it). Very good use of dynamics and rhythm – nobody “blobbs in”.

La Mourisque – Susato arr. Francis Clifford
Excellent opening statement by cornets.  Good rhythmic control from all.  Good close.

Well done Ken!
