A Band Built by the Community

Formed by the Thurcroft Colliery Welfare Committee in the late 1940s, the band folded after the pit years, but was proudly reformed in 1981 by Dennis Holling and a small group of dedicated players.

Today we compete at regional and national level, perform across South Yorkshire, and welcome players of all abilities — from complete beginners to experienced musicians.

“Only the second time in our history we've represented Yorkshire at the National Finals.”

Principal Cornet Represents Thurcroft Welfare Band at National Memorial Arboretum

Joe sat in the Millenium Chapel of Peace with members of the Royal British Legion of Goole and Howden. The Mayor of Goole is also sat in the front row of chairs.

Thurcroft Welfare Band was represented at the National Memorial Arboretum on Saturday, when principal cornet Joe played the Last Post for a Remembrance service held by the Goole and Howden Branch of the Royal British Legion.

Joe joined the Branch for a full day of activities at the Arboretum ahead of the service itself. Heavy rain fell throughout the day, and the service moved indoors, taking place in the Millennium Chapel of Peace rather than outdoors as originally planned.

The National Memorial Arboretum, near Alrewas in Staffordshire, is the UK’s year-round centre of Remembrance, home to more than 400 memorials dedicated to those who have served their country. Being asked to provide the Last Post for a Branch service there is a mark of the trust placed in Thurcroft Welfare Band’s musicians.

The band was proud to support the Goole and Howden Branch in this act of remembrance, and thanks them for the invitation to take part.

Pick Up a Brass Instrument

Open to adults and children of all ages and abilities. Whether you are a complete beginner or picking up where you left off, you will be made most welcome.

Practice takes place every Tuesday at 6:00pm, one hour before the senior band. We have instruments available on loan — so nothing is stopping you.

Did you play at school and give it up? Have you always wanted to try brass? Do you have a child who would benefit from ensemble playing?

If the answer to any of those is yes — just turn up on a Tuesday at 6pm. No appointment needed.
