Training band do us proud and raise £740 for Brain Tumour Research

The training band did us proud in a great concert to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research, which was organised following an idea by Ken Vernon to help raise funds for this worthy charity.  Our friend Alan Needham was recently diagnosed with a brain tumour and is working tirelessly to raise funds for more research.

Held at St Simon and St Judes church, on Friday 21st February 2014, this was the first formal concert for our newer members and everyone played really well.  The band were joined by friends Kim Smith, Sheila Hancocks and Louise Piper from the senior band, and friend of the band Lucy Vernon.

The band played a great variety of music and the bands pieces were interspersed by duets and solos from band members. Our training band Flugel player, Mike Robinson, also gave us two great pieces on the church organ.  Mike's second piece "The Dambusters" had the audience clapping and cheering.

Ellie  gave a great rendition of "The Ash Grove" - a pleasure to listen to as usual.  Louise played a lovely solo - Havana.  Matthew gave a polished performance of Canon.  The "oldies" made a contribution too.  Sheila and Pam steadied their nerves to play a duet each with Ken.

The whole evening was great fun and at the interval we got into the swing of the charity's "Wear a Big hat" campaign and gave everyone chance to have their photo taken with Alan in some great hats.  The photographs alone raised £50 on the night.

A big thank you to:
  • Ken for all the work he puts in every week (and on the night) to ensure the band always put on a good performance;
  • Thurcroft church who let us use the church free of charge;
  • Jill Saunders, Di Allison, Lorraine Emmerson and Mum, Graham Heeley for helping with the organisation before the event and on the night.
  • Everyone who came along to support the band, Alan and Brain Tumour Research.
What a lovely evening and raised some money into the bargain.
